The Ohio State Buckeyes football program enters the 2026 season with its strongest quarterback room under head coach Ryan Day, according to Buckeye Talk analysts. Julian Sayin, a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2025, returns as the starter with a year of experience and a new offensive coordinator in Arthur Smith. The Buckeyes open their season against Ball State on September 5, 2026.
Analysts gave the 2026 QB room an A+ grade, citing Sayin's elite talent and the rare luxury of having a five-star backup in Tavien St. Clair. St. Clair, who many believe has even higher upside than Sayin, gives Ohio State a level of depth few programs can match. 'If Julian Sayin goes down, the season’s not over,' said Andrew Gillis on the podcast.
Buckeye Talk compared every QB room since Day took over in 2019. The 2022 group with C.J. Stroud and Kyle McCord was strong, as was the 2024 room with Will Howard and Sayin as a freshman. But the 2026 room stands out for its long-term stability. 'This is about as healthy of a position room as you have on the roster,' said Stefan Krajisnik.
The Buckeyes have a clear five-year plan at quarterback. Sayin leads in 2026, St. Clair takes over in 2027, and Ohio State has flexibility for 2028. By then, much of the roster will be filled with homegrown talent, reducing the need for portal stops. This stability is a luxury in today’s college football landscape.
Quarterback depth is often the difference between contenders and champions. With Sayin and St. Clair, Ohio State avoids the pitfall of being one injury away from a lost season. The Buckeyes’ title hopes in 2026 and beyond rest on this elite QB room.
